Illinois now has 44 counties plus eleven townships in a 45th that approved a referendum to consider separating from Cook County and forming a new state.
Eleven townships in Adams County joined eleven full counties that voted in favor of nonbinding ballot questions on Tuesday.
Illinois Separation Director Loret Newlin told The Center Square that six counties came in with less than 70% of voters saying yes.
Newlin said voter approval ranged from 57% in McDonough County to 90% in one Adams County township.
Seven counties already have contact persons for referendum petitions in 2028.
