The City of Vandalia is moving forward with work to seek another grant, this one in an effort to possibly bring a new grocery store to the city. During Monday night’s Vandalia City Council meeting, the council unanimously approved an agreement for $2,000 with the South Central Illinois Regional Planning & Development Commission (SCIRPDC) for grant writing services for as the city will submit an application for the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Illinois Grocery Initiative Grant — New Stores in Food Deserts. Luke Eastin of the SCIRPDC was on hand for the meeting and explained what the city is applying for with this potential development.
With the matching portion of the grant, alderman Bob Bowen questioned what money the city would be coming up with and Mayor Doug Knebel explained that the matching portion would be up to the developer with no money from the city at this time.
Alderman Andy Lester asked Eastin about the timeline and Eastin says it is a fairly expedited process with the city most likely having an answer in the early Spring. Along with the unanimous approval of the grant writing services, the council also unanimously approved a resolution in support of the Grocery Initiative Grant.
