An Illinois state rep says the attempted closure of Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna shows that the state’s Department of Human Services is failing vulnerable residents and failing taxpayers.
Union County State’s Attorney Tyler Tripp announced on Tuesday that DHS withdrew its request to shut down Choate.
State Rep. Charlie Meier filed four bills last Thursday aimed at protecting Choate residents and jobs.
Meier said the department had to prove there’s no need for hospital beds at Choate before shutting it down.
Meier said DHS has failed the developmentally disabled population in Illinois.
DHS did not immediately respond to The Center Square’s request for comment.
