Between General Sales Tax and the new Grocery Tax, the overall tax revenues look to be up for the City of Vandalia so far this fiscal year.
Just looking at the General Sales Tax Revenues, you would assume that revenues are down this year. But, beginning on January 1st of this year the State of Illinois was no longer collecting the 1% Grocery Sales Tax. The City of Vandalia had to pass a special ordinance for that tax to continue and it now shows up in a different category.
Adding together the General Sales Tax and new Grocery Tax revenues, you see the City of Vandalia through 5 months of this fiscal year has revenues of $1,075,872.03. That is up from $1,031,158.09 at this point last year. As for the Grocery Tax, the revenues through 6 months of collections so far have averaged $35,894 per month–with 3 of those months being over $40,000. That is revenue the City of Vandalia would have lost without enacting their own grocery tax.
