The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is urging Southern Illinois University Edwardsville officials to stop interfering with student journalists and respect the independence of the student newspaper.
Marie McMullan of FIRE’s Student Press Freedom Initiative said SIUE’s communications office insisted on being present for interviews between student reporters and university staff.
McMullan said police recommended closing the case.
SIUE Director of Communications Nicole Franklin said The Alestle repeatedly published information that is inaccurate, and calling for accuracy is not interference.
