Illinois teachers unions have donated big money to political campaigns.
An investigation by The Center Square found the Illinois PAC for Education and Illinois Federation of Teachers COPE contributed $6.65 million and $6.51 million, respectively, to political organizations.
The Illinois Federation of Teachers COPE has contributed $47,800 to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and $177,500 to Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch.
Lance Izumi, senior director of education studies at the Pacific Research Institute, said kids are used as political props.
“The reason why the kids are there in the first place, to get an education, is secondary for the unions,” Izumi told The Center Square.
The Illinois Education Association announced its endorsement of Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Monday.
Both the IEA and the Illinois Federation of Teachers have financially supported the governor’s campaigns.
