The City of Vandalia will at least explore the possibilities of helping with parking issues at the Family YMCA of Fayette County.
During a sports season at the Y on Saturday mornings especially, there are some major parking issues that pop up and can lead to pretty heavy congestion. And, it can also be dangerous with younger children darting in and out of the parked cars.
During this past Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Alderman Andy Lester brought up the issue. And, Alderman Bret Brosman echoed his sentiments, saying he would like to look into the possibility of doing something to help alleviate the issue.
Brosman suggested potentially widening the street that runs by the YMCA and that would potentially allow for angle parking on both sides of the street. Brosman believes that would add to drivers being able to better see any children that might come out into traffic. Speaking on our podcast “Talking about Vandalia,” Mayor Doug Knebel says it’s something they can check and see if it might be possible.
As the YMCA is looking at potential expansion soon, added parking is planned to be park of that expansion. Also, some have suggested using the available parking at the Kaskaskia College-Vandalia campus–although that does make for a longer walk to the YMCA fields.
