The City of Vandalia’s Lake Committee met on Monday evening and those on the Lake’s Northside are looking for a bigger return on their investment.
Over the past few years, the City of Vandalia has raised those on the northside’s fees $50 per year each year. But, those on the northside say they are not seeing any return for that added money. Lake Committee Chairman Russ Stunkel admitted the northside needs some TLC and some general clean up is very much needed in several areas. There was talk of the City having the equipment to get the jobs done that are needed for clean up work on the northside. But, Mayor Doug Knebel says–since the project has not been fully tackled for quite some time–it would probably make sense to have it outsourced at this time to get it taken care of all at one. And, Lake Committee member and Alderman Andy Lester agreed with that. Among the projects that were brought up during the meeting was the need for trimming trees as they hang over roadways and scrape boats and trucks, fixing washout areas and better and more frequent mowing. There were other possible jobs brought up, but those appeared to be the most pressing and needed according to those in attendance for the meeting.
There was also discussion about the northside fees and those in attendance questioned whether or not they would continue to increase each year. Chairman Stunkel said he was fine with a one year freeze on the rates and then re-evaluate after that. Later–during the Vandalia City Council meeting–Stunkel brought up that topic to the full city council and they did seem receptive to that idea. City Administrator LaTisha Paslay says that will be drawn up in an ordinance and will be voted on at the next City Council meeting.
The current fees for the northside of Vandalia Lake are $600 per year for city residents, $650 per year for county residents and $900 per year for out of county residents.
