(Washington, DC) — The state of Illinois is honoring the legacy of Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. Governor Pritzker signed legislation into law that officially designates July 25th as Emmett Till Day in Illinois.
Emmett was the 14-year-old Black child from Chicago who was kidnapped, beaten and brutally murdered in Mississippi by white supremacists in 1955. Yesterday’s signing took place at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, the site where Mamie Till-Mobley held a public, open-casket funeral for her son. Till’s murder launched the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.
