Several folks, especially in central and eastern Fayette County, spotted what looked to be a smaller funnel cloud as some rain and storms moved through the area very slowly on Thursday.
Fayette County Emergency Management Agency Director Ryan Scott says he spoke to the National Weather Service and they believe this to be what is called a Landspout. The definition of a landspout is a type of week, non-supercell tornado that forms from the ground up. Unlike traditional tornadoes that descend from organized, rotating storm clouds, landspouts develop when surface wind boundaries collide and are stretched upward by a growing thunderstorm’s updraft.
Scott says they also believe the landspout may have caused some crop damage and ground scarring in the area of 1800 Ave and 1915 St. Also, Scott reports there was a sighting of a potential landspout late Thursday afternoon at Main and Peoria in Vandalia and there were also some reports of sightings in the Fillmore area.
