The cost to taxpayers when natural disasters hit is sometimes unclear in Illinois, but a meteorologist with the National Weather Service says a record number of tornadoes across the state may not be as impactful as some might assume.
Brad Cole, director of the Illinois Municipal League, told The Center Square one cost that isn’t troublesome for taxpayers is impacts on insurance rates for local governments. The IML itself insures around 60 to 65% of all municipalities in Illinois.
Alex Erwin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Illinois, said the uptick in the number of tornadoes might not just be a result of shifting weather trends.
The meteorologist said the use of new and improved technologies, such as surveying through satellite imagery, may also be among the reasons for the record number of reported tornadoes this year.
