An Illinois law to ban electronic processing fees on taxes and tips remains on hold after a federal court ruling and a one-year delay passed by the General Assembly.
U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Kendall ruled on Monday that a federal order issued in April blocks the Illinois Interchange Fee Prohibition Act.
Hours before the ruling, state lawmakers voted to delay implementation of the law from July 1st of this year to July 1st, 2027.
Rob Karr of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association said banks and credit card processors previously opposed debit card swipe fees.
Karr said the law’s opponents are predicting chaos like they did 15 years ago.
Karr called the federal court ruling a temporary setback.
