State government will have power to regulate auto insurance rates under legislation headed to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s desk.
The Illinois House passed Senate Bill 714 on Wednesday night.
State Rep. Thaddeus Jones said the bill would bring consumer protection and affordability to residents.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias campaigned aggressively in favor of the legislation.
State Rep. Jeff Keicher said Giannoulias could lower rates himself by applying license renewal tests to people who have had tickets or accidents.
Giannoulias is rumored to be considering a run for mayor of Chicago.
