Illinois’ congressional district maps are being challenged over what some argue are unconstitutional racial requirements for districts.
Former Republican State Rep. Jeanne Ives brought the case alongside J. Christian Adams, president and general counsel of the Public Interest Legal Foundation.
Ives said state Democrats have brazenly moved to draw maps based on racial lines, especially since the 2020 U.S. Census.
Ives said a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Louisiana’s district map is what explicitly made it clear that Illinois’ congressional map is unconstitutional.
Due to procedural rules the Board of Elections and Gov. JB Pritzker, the subjects being challenged in the case, have three weeks to respond to the lawsuit’s claims.
The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment, and the board said it does not give comment on pending litigation.
