Reasons for Illinois residents losing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits depend on who you ask.
During a Senate Revenue Committee hearing on Wednesday evening, state Senator Don DeWitte asked state Senator Lakesia Collins why she thought 150,000 people lost SNAP benefits in Illinois.
DeWitte said the Illinois Department of Human Services director suggested federal cuts were not the reason, but instead it was because people no longer qualify.
DeWitte said the state would face penalties due its error rate for missed or mistaken payments.
DeWitte said Illinois’ error rate of nearly 12% has not changed, even with 150,000 people removed from SNAP because they don’t qualify.
