The Illinois Senate hit the pause button on a redistricting amendment after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s congressional map, but Governor J.B. Pritzker is promising to push back.
University of Illinois Professor Jason Mazzone told The Center Square the decision imposes a very significant limitation on section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker called it an attack on minorities across the country.
In response to the ruling, Illinois Senate President Don Harmon announced that a proposed state constitutional amendment on redistricting would not advance this session.
State Rep. Ryan Spain said the amendment by House Speaker Chris Welch doubled down on partisan power.
Welch said in a statement that the Supreme Court eliminated the last check on extremists who seek to silence Black and Latino voices.
