Vandalia High School band member Dashel Whiteman recently achieved a big honor as a member of the St. Louis Academy Brass Band. Whiteman joined the band in September of 2025 where he practiced weekly with the group made up of youth from the greater St. Louis area. The band recently competed on April 11 in the North American Brass Band Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana for the first time and took first place in the competition. In a release by the STLABB about the honor, Director Bradley Eston spoke of the achievement saying “I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication these students have shown,” said director Bradley Eston. “Their commitment to excellence and their passion for music truly paid off on stage.” Video of the first place performance can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s69-nZVX_fI
