An individual came before the Fayette County Board at their meeting on Tuesday night to address a fire that reportedly killed 3o to 35 dogs in January.
In the early morning hours on Wednesday, January 21st Vandalia Fire Chief Zac Stombaugh reported they were called to a structure fire in the 200 block of East 1800 Avenue. Chief Stombaugh reported that the location was used as a dog kennel and they estimated 30 to 35 dogs were killed in the barn.
Pat Briley addressed the County Board on the matter. She says the property is owned by an individual who lives in Effingham. She also stated she learned that around 50 to 60 dogs survived the fire. But, she has not been able to discover where those dogs went. Briley said she would like to see the county find a way to pass a county ordinance against Animal Cruelty or against “puppy mills.” A puppy mill is defined as “an establishment that breeds puppies for sale, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane.”
Fayette County Board Chairman Jacob Harris says the matter is currently under investigation and they were not going to comment while that is ongoing. But, he said it is something they will be looking into after the investigation. Fayette County Board Vice Chairman Pat Click told Briley her concerns are valid but that it was important to let the investigation occur at this time. The owner of the property has not been charged with any type of wrong doing in regards to this fire at this time.
