(Peoria Co, IL) — Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson is receiving the maximum prison term for the killing of Sonya Massey. Cheers erupted yesterday as Grayson was sentenced to 20-years behind bars. He was convicted in October of second-degree murder. Authorities say the former deputy shot and killed the unarmed Black woman in July 2024 after she called 9-1-1 over a potential intruder at her Springfield home. Before his sentencing, Grayson apologized to Massey’s family and said no words can take back the anger and hurt he caused.
