The City of Vandalia’s Economic Development Commission got to learn more about Data Centers at their January meeting. And, now the City of Vandalia begins to study the possibility of having one here.
For exactly what is a data center the simple answer is they are centralized facility that houses servers, storing and network equipment that can process, store, and distribute large amounts of data. Michael Carter of the company BBT was on hand to give a presentation to the group. He stated they have the Bit Coin Center that is currently running in Vandalia. He spoke about several different topics in regards to data centers–with some of the biggest issues being just how large of a center you have. Carter also talked about some of the positives that a community could see with having a data center in town.
One potential location for such a center in Vandalia would be in the 115 acre tract of land that is owned by the city at the west interchange. City of Vandalia Economic Development Director Amber Daulbaugh said this just a first meeting and just the start of the information gathering phase.
Speaking on this week’s podcast “Talking about Vandalia,” Mayor Doug Knebel says “what we learned is there’s more to learn.”
We will hear more on the data centers coming up tomorrow, along with some of the potential negatives for a community.

We need to worry about keeping downtown alive not some data center. How many permanent jobs will it create? There is alot of things to consider with moving forward on this issue.
