Illinois’ outbound migration in 2025 topped the number of move-ins to the state, marking the 17th straight year that trend has festered.
With the latest Atlas Van Lines report show the smallest gap between move-ins and move-outs since 2008, staffers still found 54% of the company’s clients were leaving the state, compared to 46% of new arrivals.
With company officials adding the changes it found have more to do with affordability constraints than anything else, Republican State Representative Martin McLaughlin said the flood of people now heading for the state line should come as no surprise.
Previous Atlas studies highlight outmigration peaked across the state in 2023 with 63% of all movers heading for new confines in other states. More recently, pollsters found residents point to high taxes as the state’s top issues.
U.S. Census Bureau data shows Illinois has lost around 420,000 residents since 2020. New annual Census estimates for Illinois and other states are expected later this month.
