The Vandalia Fire Department dealt with multiple calls on Monday, including a structure fire with extensive damage.
At 9:34 am on Monday morning, Vandalia Fire Chief Zac Stombaugh says the Fire Department was paged out to a structure fire at 870 E. 900 Avenue in Shobonier. He says they arrived to find a single wide mobile home with heavy fire conditions at one end. Chief Stombaugh says crews made a fairly quick knock down on the fire but damage was pretty extensive through half of the home. He adds the cause of the fire is unknown but believes to be related to an electrical issue with space heaters. Chief Stombaugh says that 10 firefighters were on scene for about 2 hours. He also added a special Thank You to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and Rural Med EMS for their assistance.
Chief Stombaugh says that while cleaning up from the first call, there were paged out for a lift assist with the Vandalia Police Department and Rural Med EMS to a residence in Vandalia and they were on the scene a short time.
Chief Stombaugh says they were then paged out at 1:40 pm for a structure fire at 1603 W. Janette Drive and arrived to find smoke in one of the bedrooms and were able to locate the source and mitigate any further risks. He says that 12 firefighters were on the scene for about 20 minutes.
