As some pay estimates come in, some of the City of Vandalia Alderman say they are not all that happy with the final product in the Randolph Street project that was completed back in September.
At their meeting on Monday night, the Vandalia City Council approved final pay estimate number 5 to Baxmeyer Construction Inc. for the project at $52,625.08. This coming up led to multiple Aldermen and Mayor Doug Knebel voicing their dissatisfaction with the what can be described for at least half of the new roadway as a rough and choppy feel. But, City of Vandalia Public Works Director James Jackson says he feels it came out fine.
City Administrator LaTisha Paslay says, as for total costs on the project, they do not have all of that yet. But, the project did come in well under budget with the original engineer’s estimate for the total project being $1,248,120 and the contractor’s bid from Baxmeyer Construction being $693,517.77. And, even with engineering design added in the cost of the project looks to be a little under $800,000 at this time.
The project wasn’t without its problems, however. Back in August, the Construction company had to get approval from the city council to allow a 13 feet by 80 feet section to remain in place that graded out to 3000 PSI (pounds per square inch)–which is below the I-DOT required 3500 PSI. The City Council did accept to allow that to remain in place with the construction company not charging for that piece. The roadway then opened in late September.
