A Vandalia Junior High School employee has been given the American Red Cross Life Saving Award.
At Monday’s Vandalia School Board meeting, Junior High Paraprofessional Jeanette Karrow was given the award. According to the American Red Cross and Vandalia Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Garrison, Karrow sprang into action when a student began choking at breakfast on the first day of the 2024-25 school year. Using skills learned through Red Cross CPR and First Aid training, Karrow conducted abdominal thrusts and quickly dislodged the food from the student’s airway.
The award is presented by the American Red Cross to individuals who step up in an emergency situation and help save or sustain a life.
