The Illinois Gaming Board has reported a 15% drop in September sports betting since the state imposed a new tax on wagers.
Sports Betting Alliance of Illinois spokesperson Maura Possley said five million fewer bets were placed in Illinois this September than in September 2024.
The tax is part of the $55.2 billion budget signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in June.
Possley said September was the first full month of betting activity since the tax was implemented.
Possley said the data from Illinois is a dramatic departure from trends in other states.
Possley said earnings reports from betting companies show that sports betting is increasing nationally.
