Today is Veterans Day in the United States.
Today is a federal holiday to honor all those who served in the military. It is a federal holiday, so non-essential federal government offices are closed and mail is not delivered. The day is dedicated to celebrating America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. It originated as “Armistic Day” in 1919, marking the one year anniversary of the armistice that ended major hostilities of World War 1 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day.
