The recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill Act scraps the $200 tax on suppressors, a move gun-rights advocates praise. Critics say it’s weak reform that keeps unconstitutional federal controls in place.
Firearms suppressors were previously regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968, but a new law removed them from the NFA while keeping oversight under the GCA. Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson welcomed the tax repeal and expects more regulation to be rolled back in the future.
Before the bill passed, Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warner voiced her opposition in a video that circulated on social media.
Illinois currently bans ownership of firearm suppressors, a federal lawsuit, Anderson v. Raoul, challenges the ban as unconstitutional, and is awaiting a ruling after being delayed pending a related case.
