Nine law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in Illinois have been memorialized and now are prompting calls for changes in the SAFE-T Act. One aspect of the controversial law involves electronic monitoring. Critics say a provision of the SAFE-T Act allows defendants two days a week to move freely and commit crimes. During the police memorial ceremony last week, Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza said it is just bad policy.
State Representative and Police Officer Patrick Sheehan pleaded with his fellow lawmakers to fix this broken law.
Sheehan says the SAFE-T Act is a prime example of policy that has weakened law enforcement’s ability to protect citizens.
