State lawmakers are considering legislation some say aims to enhance protections for freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
The Illinois House Judiciary Committee passed House Bill 1077, which aims to reign in SLAPP, Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation.
State Rep. Daniel Didech, the bill’s sponsor, said current law has been rendered almost toothless by judicial decisions.
Didech said the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the current law’s protections do not extend to the press.
State Rep. Dan Ugaste, R-Geneva, said Didech’s bill goes too far.
Ugaste said the measure would allow for sloppy reporting and inaccurate statements in the public arena.
