Some Republican lawmakers want to curb instances of motorists fleeing police by making the offense a felony. In DuPage County alone, cases of fleeing police have increased over the past 3 years by 151%. State Senator Seth Lewis says police departments all over Illinois are experiencing motorists refusing to pull over for a traffic stop.
Senate Minority Leader John Curran says anyone fleeing police in Florida is charged with a Class 3 Felony and a $5,000 fine. Curran’s legislation would increase the penalty in Illinois to a Class 4 Felony.
A Class 4 Felony conviction in Illinois would results in 1 to 3 years of prison time.
