An energy expert says Illinois could face power challenges as there is an extreme risk of uncertain energy availability.
During a Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee hearing, Mark Tiemeier, an advisor with Midwest Reliability
Organization, said with power plants being taken offline, and Illinois’ move to get more electric vehicles on the roads, there will
likely be power challenges in the future. He says the impact of EV chargers on the grid is unknown.
Tiemeier says EV chargers can negatively impact bulk power system reliability. As a result, he recommends EV and charging system
manufacturers collaborate with utilities to establish performance standards to develop grid-friendly EV charging.
