Gerald E. “Jerry” Gable, 92, of Vandalia, IL, passed away at 11:04 AM, Sunday, March 31, 2024 at his home, surrounded by family.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 06, 2024 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia with Pastor Paul Cagle officiating. Interment will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00-11:00 AM, Saturday, at the funeral home. Gerald Edward Gable was born on July 30, 1931 in Shobonier, IL, the son of George Frederick and Matilda A. “Tillie” (Schmid) Gable. He married Phyllis Ann Daniels on June 21, 1980. Together they celebrated nearly 44 years of marriage.
Jerry was a proud military veteran having served in the United States Army from February of 1952-January of 1954. He retired from Crane Packing after many years of employment. In his younger years, Jerry was very active and enjoyed golfing, bowling, and softball. Later in life, he loved travelling with his wife and cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Jerry was also a devout and faithful member of the First Pentecostal Church of Vandalia.
Mr. Gable is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gable of Vandalia; son, Rocky Bennyhoff of Farina; son, Mike Hobler & wife Connie of Vandalia; son, Ed Hobler & wife Lisa of Vandalia; grandchildren, Michael, Angela (Matthew), Anna, Jonathon (Hunter), Erica (Michael), Lauren, Desiree (Greg), & Carley; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Orville (Norma), Cecil (JoAnn), Evelyn (Edward), Charlotte (William), Ardis (Earl), Virginia (Norris), & Wayne.
