Legislation that would help parents monitor their children’s social media activity through third-party software is moving through the Illinois General Assembly. The Let Parents Choose Protection Act would require social media companies to provide children’s social media data to third-party apps, which parents could access. Rose Bronstein of Chicago lost her son to suicide after he was allegedly bullied online.
Hope Ledford from the group Chamber of Progress, voiced opposition to the bill.
Lawmakers voted to move the measure out of the House Consumer Protection committee. The bill’s sponsor expects the legislation to be voted on by the Illinois House in early April.
