A St. Elmo man was killed in a 3 vehicle accident on Interstate 70 in Bond County on Saturday evening.
Illinois State Police Troop 8 reports they responded to the accident on Saturday evening at 8:03 pm on Interstate 70 eastbound near mile post 39. The report says that 3 vehicles were all traveling east on I-70. The report says that 2 of the vehicles were stopped in traffic in the right lane. A vehicle driven by 47 year old Ali Haji of Minneapolis, Minnesota reportedly failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of the vehicle and horse trailer being operated by 58 year old Anthony Feldhake of Mason and that forced Mason’s vehicle into a vehicle being driven by 42 year old Satnam Singh of Stockton, California. 66 year old Gary Bartels of St. Elmo was a passenger in the Feldhake vehicle and was flown to a regional hospital for treatment. But, State Police say that Bartels later died from his injuries. The Feldhake vehicle was also pulling a trailer with 4 horses. Three of the horses died and the fourth horse was injured.
Haji was flown to a regional hospital with life threatening injuries while both Feldhake and Singh reported no injuries at the scene.
