Following the two-and-a-half year prison sentence a federal judge in Chicago handed down to former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s chief of staff and House Clerk, Illinois Republicans are demanding more ethics reforms.
Madigan still faces a trial in the scheme federal prosecutors called “Madigan Enterprise,” alleging the longtime speaker and Democratic Party of Illinois chairman used his public office for personal gain. His longtime chief of staff Tim Mapes was found guilty of lying to prosecutors in August and was sentenced Monday.
Republicans released a statement saying more ethics reforms are needed. They’re demanding their bills that would prohibit elected officials from using campaign money for criminal defense, install a three-year revolving door ban on lawmakers lobbying, and give more powers to the Legislative Ethics Commission are a must. State Rep. Norine Hammond said the latter is crucial.
Madigan’s trial in the case has been postponed from April to October, after the November general election.
