As states around the country limit access to voting to prevent fraud, Illinois is going in the opposite direction. During a House Ethics and Election Committee hearing, proposals included mailing voting ballots to Illinoisans even if they didn’t request one. Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons says Illinois is becoming one of the easiest states in the country to vote for several reasons, including allowing convicted felons the right to vote.
House Bill 4198 would make it easier to vote by mail in Illinois. Ammons’ office has come under fire in recent years for election issues, including a lawsuit over the mishandling of ballots in 2022, and a reprimand from the Illinois State Board of Elections for counting ballots early in 2020.
