The Vandalia City Council approved a street closure for a Pride Event to be held on June 1st.
Back in November, This N That Owner Karen Sharp came before the City Council to request a street closure in front of their business on North 5th Street for a Pride Event to be held on June 1st. That led to Joe Lawson addressing the Vandalia City Council at their December 4th meeting opposed to the street closure being granted.
The City Council tabled the vote on the matter at the December 4th meeting, as they were not sure that all the businesses in the area of This N That had been contacted. For last night’s meeting, a full house was on hand in support of the street closure for the Pride Event. Before discussion on the matter began, City Attorney Ryan Connor addressed the City Council on what their reasoning could be for potentially not approving the street closure.
The documents that Connor had included in their packet were on Non-Discrimination in Public Places from the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Attorney General’s Office. Karen Sharp then spoke on the event they are planning for June 1st.
Aldermen Bob Bowen and Andy Lester both told the crowd their reason for tabling the matter at the last meeting was to make sure that all businesses in the area were OK with the closure and for no other reason. Alderman Steve Barker said he had spoken to some of the businesses in that area and they were fine with the closure. The City Council voted to approve the street closure by a vote of 7 to 1 with Alderman Mike Hobler casting the lone No vote.
As for the event, Sharp has stated at earlier meetings they will have vendors and musical entertainment from Summer Obsorne, Judy McNutt, Substance and others. The street closure will be from 12 pm to 8 pm and from the southern property line of This N That to Madison Street.
