A new law puts an end to a statewide moratorium on new nuclear power plants from the 1980s, officially bringing the prospect of new nuclear power plants back to the Land of Lincoln.
The measure was first heard earlier this year but led to a veto from Gov. J.B. Pritzker. A revised measure from state Sen. Sue Rezin was passed during the fall veto session and signed by Pritzker on Friday.
In a statement from Pritzker in August, he said the measure was vetoed due to “vague definitions in the bill” that include the “overly broad definition of advanced reactors.”
Rezin, during the veto session, said that the new legislation was crafted to meet the governor’s requests.
With the the bill now law, Illinois can begin putting together new regulatory guidelines to allow small modular reactors to be built throughout the state.
