Illinois has announced it will be utilizing an additional $160 million in taxpayer funds to help care for the growing number of migrants arriving from the southern U.S. border, a move some state legislators are questioning.
The state has seen over 24,000 arrive over the past 15 months, which has led to the state spending more and more taxpayer dollars to care for the crisis.
State Rep. David Friess says the state should not be using those funds for noncitizens.
State Sen. Andrew Chesney has also spoken out against Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s plan to use the $160 million, saying -quote- “these are taxpayer funds that he is diverting,” and that he needs to check his “priorities and work harder to ensure those who live and pay taxes here are taken care of first.”
