The City of Vandalia will now have four license plate readers in the community. And, they have agreed to a new 5-year contract on those units.
The current license plate readers are located near the Circle K Convenience Store, near the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Veteran’s Avenue and near the Mile Marker 61 Exit off off Interstate 70. The fourth reader will be located at Veteran’s and Sunset. The new agreement with Flock Safety will lock in a price of $2500 per year on each unit for the next 5 years. Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray said the cost would have gone up to $3000 per year for each unit after the new year. Chief Ray says their current three license plate readers have been in use for 6 to 8 months. And, he says they have been helpful with several issues.
Chief Ray says that St. Elmo and Ramsey both have license plate readers and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office also has a few, as well, and there are thousands around the state. Chief Ray says another potential use would be in the event of a missing person.
The City Council approved the new reader and new contract by a unanimous vote.
