For the fourth year in a row, Chicago ranks as the country’s most corrupt city and Illinois stands as the third-most corrupt state in a University of Illinois at Chicago study. Researchers analyzed public corruption statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2021 in arriving at their findings, none of which come as a shock to Republican State Rep. Dan Ugaste.
Researchers point to recent episodes of bribery, extortion and theft of campaign funds involving state lawmakers as acts that continue to eat away at public trust in government. Ugaste insists Republicans remain committed to changing the way Springfield does business. In all, there were 32 public corruption convictions in the Northern District of Illinois that includes Chicago in 2021, almost a 33% increase from the 22 convictions that were reported in 2020.
