Members of each party are laying out their priorities with the start of fall veto session at the Illinois statehouse.
Showing Democrats’ priorities for the first part of the veto session, House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch advanced a measure out of committee to allow statehouse staffers to unionize.
Republican state Rep. Ryan Spain criticized the measure taking precedence during the veto session as it only impacts a small number of state employees. He said that is misguided when the sunset of the Invest in Kids school choice scholarship program approaches Dec. 31.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker has said he will sign an extension, but it’s up to legislators to come to a deal. Legislators continue session Wednesday.
