The Vandalia Police Department has released further information on Thursday night’s incident in the 1500 block of North 8th Street.
Vandalia Police Department reports say that at 6:42 pm on Thursday evening, a Vandalia Police Department Officer responded to a report of a disturbance at 1502 N. 8th Street. The person giving police the complaint said than an intoxicated man–later identified as 44 year old Steven D. Hilton–was causing a disturbance. Upon arrival, the Vandalia PD Officer reportedly observed Hilton outside the apartment complex, engaged in a heated argument. Police reports say that when they approached Hilton, he retreated into his apartment and became armed with an AR-15 style rifle, equipped with an optic. Reports say the officer sought cover and immediately notified other officers, and together they established a secure perimeter.
Reports says that after a standoff that lasted for 1 hour and 27 minutes, Hilton was safely taken into custody at 8:09 pm on Thursday night. The report states that during this time, Hilton was observed loading a round into the chamber of the AR-15 style rifle, raising serious concerns for the safety of those involved.
Vandalia Police reports say that a search of the residence and Hilton’s vehicle uncovered a collection of firearms and ammunition, including two Glock handguns, a Colt M4 Carbine 5.56 with attached optics and suppressor, a loaded PWS .308 rifle and a variety of other weapons.
Hilton is being charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Disorderly Conduct. The report adds that Hilton appeared to be under the influence at the time of his arrest, with a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath.
Also, the report states that due to the nature of the incident, 8th Street was temporarily closed, and nearby businesses were evacuated. And, the Freshman football game at Mark Greer Field was canceled and evacuated as a precaution.
Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray says in the statement he wanted to commend the swift and professional response of their officers and all involved agencies and their coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of all parties involved. Chief Ray says that assistance was provided by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, St. Elmo Police Department, Ramsey Police Department, Illinois State Police, Rural Med EMS, ARCH Air Medical, City of Vandalia Street Department, Illinois Department of Transportation and the Vandalia School District.
Chief Ray adds the Vandalia Police Department emphasizes its commitment to public safety and will continue to investigate the incident.
