Illinois election officials say a repeat of an international hack of the state’s voter database is unlikely. Russian hackers accessed the database for the Illinois State Board of Elections in 2016, which included voters’ names, addresses and driver’s license numbers. An investigation revealed up to 500-thousand personal voter records may have been accessed during that breach. During a House Ethics and Elections Committee hearing, the board’s spokesman Matt Dietrich said protecting against hacking threats is a constant battle.
The agency has developed the Cyber Navigator Program, which splits the state up into geographic zones and places two Cyber Navigators in each zone. Their goal is to train the end users in election authority offices to help guard against security breaches.
