Two of the seven justices on the Illinois Supreme Court whose campaign committees received a million dollars each from Gov. J.B. Pritzker when they ran for the job are soon to be part of an opinion on one of the governor’s signature laws. The SAFE-T Act passed in early 2021 and was changed multiple times before major parts were to be enacted at the beginning of 2023. One component on hold because of a lawsuit brought by state’s attorneys across the state is the end of cash bail for criminal defendants. Pritzker argued in March the policy makes things more safe and fair.
But some have called foul as last year Pritzker gave the campaign committee for two successful candidates for the Illinois Supreme Court $1 million each. He said it’s “ridiculous” to think they should have recused themselves.
The Illinois Supreme Court announced Friday that they will release a ruling in the SAFE-T Act case Tuesday.
