The Fayette County Board heard from two guests during its June monthly meeting on Tuesday night. Vandalia Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Garrison was on hand to inform the board about a planned project to move and expand the Okaw Area Vocational School. Dr. Garrison explained that with the current building and lack of space, that they have had to turn students away and have been unable to expand their offerings due to machinery needed not being able to fit into the current building. A new location on City of Vandalia property would allow them to expand from 40,000 square feet to 60,000 square feet and build on the success of their current programs that would better prepare students to move on to trade schools or right into the workforce upon graduation. Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman and school board members Reid Torbeck, Adam Braun and Kevin Satterthwaite were also on hand with Dr. Garrison as they discussed part of the project as well and passed out information on the project.
Also on hand for the meeting was City of Vandalia City Administrator LaTisha Paslay to talk to the board about the upcoming SummerFest that will be held at Vandalia Lake on Sunday, July 2. The new event will include several events such as a sand volleyball tournament, food trucks, family activities and music throughout the day with fireworks capping off the day. Later in the meeting, the county board approved a variance in time for the special liquor license for the event to allow the sale of alcohol until 11:59pm that night.
In other business, the board approved the appointment of Matt Philbrick to serve a three year term on the Health Department Board, approved the resignation of county board member Todd Best due to him moving, and approved $6,650 for Centrica for work with the HVAC dampeners.
