Despite concerns from many groups, a school cyber bullying notification law is now on the books in Illinois. The law requires school administrators in the state to inform parents and guardians of bullying within 24 hours. The bill’s sponsor, state Senator Sara Feigenholtz, says if not addressed promptly, cyber bullying can lead to tragic results.
During debate, state Senator Seth Lewis expressed concerns over the 24-hour requirement, and said this type of legislation is going to result in teachers and administrators calling it quits.
Several school groups opposed the measure because of the 24-hour time period, including the Illinois Principals Association and Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools.
