It is now more difficult to ban books in Illinois. A bill that withholds funding from libraries that ban books has been signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker.
In order to be eligible for state funding under the law, libraries must adopt a set of principles that prohibits book bans. State Senator Jason Plummer, an outspoken critic of the law, says it takes away control from local officials.
Other Republicans have argued that the goal is to make sure books distributed in public schools and libraries are age appropriate.
