The Vandalia City Council has approved working with the Vandalia School District for a School Resource Officer. Who that individual will be is not ready to be announced.
The Vandalia City Council voted 8 to 0 to approve the officer, who will report to the Vandalia Police Chief but would get day-to-day assignments from the Vandalia School District. Some matters for the new officer were discussed during Monday night’s meeting. Alderman Bret Brosman asked about transportation. Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray says there is a squad car currently not being used on the city lot that would serve for this purpose. Chief Ray said they would need to replace the radio in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman says he is 100% in support of the School Resource Officer.
And, Mayor Gottman reiterates 75% of the cost will be picked up by the School District and the other 25% picked up by the City.
As for who the Officer will be, Chief Ray says they have one individual interested that is currently a Vandalia Police Officer, but they would need to have that individual approved by the Vandalia School District. The Council did authorize hiring another officer to replace the potential School Resource Officer.
