The SAFE-T Act, set to go into effect on Jan. 1, ends cash bail in Illinois. With one week left of session before the end of the year, community groups and state lawmakers weighed in on the measure. The Safety, Accountability, Fairness, and Equity Today, or SAFE-T, Act, was approved by the previous General Assembly in early 2021. The law makes several changes, including eliminating cash bail starting Jan. 1. With one week left of this General Assembly before the end of the year, community activists joined alongside state Rep. Maurice West pushing for no changes to be made.
Republicans have called for repealing the measure due to how Democrats handled things, said state Sen. John Curran.
Lawmakers return to the capitol for three days next week after the Thanksgiving holiday.
